Ciderland by James Crowden - 99027

A glorious book by James Crowden, poet, historian, broadcaster and one time cidermaker - a 'just must have' for any practising or would-be cidermaker or discerning cider drinker. James explores the history and culture of cidermaking and cider-drinking from the seventeenth century to the present day. He takes the reader on a tour around the West Country and beyond, visiting a large number of artisan cidermakers who communicate a rare and infectious passion for their age-old art.

  • "Intoxicating......A hogshead of cider distilled to the perfect quintessence of words" - Tom Jaine, restauranteur, food & drink writer and formerly editor of the Good Food Guide.
  • "A terrific, well-informed book that should contribute enormously to the history of alcoholic beverages" - Tom Stevenson, author of the World Encyclopedia of Champagne and Sparkling Wine.

Ciderland is richly illustrated with hundreds of beautiful colour photographs taken by Claire Lloyd Davies.

The book also includes comprehensive summaries and descriptions of most cider and perry producers from the Channel Islands to Herefordshire, lists Cider Museums, Historical Collections and local Orchard Groups, making it an excellent gazetteer for a dedicated cider-drinking enthusiast.

James also looks at the rise of perry-making and profiles some of the people dedicated to getting the best out of their local pears. There are sections on cider and perry tasting (now recognised as being as sophisticated as wine) and on the proven health benefits of both drinks.

One very important section covers the history of sparkling cider and the evolution of method champenoise in England from 1632 onwards.
