Spiced Gooseberry Chutney


  • 5lbs gooseberries
  • 4lbs sugar
  • 18 fl oz cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp ground ginger
  • 1 orange – grated rind and juice


  1. Put all ingredients together in a stainless steel pan (the bottom section of the Mehu Liisa Fruit & Veg Steamer is excellent for this purpose) and allow them to infuse for several hours till the juices run -overnight would do fine.
  2. Bring slowly to the boil stirring frequently with a wooden spoon.
  3. Cook on a gentle heat for about 2 hours, continuing to stir regularly to prevent burning.
  4. When thick, bottle in air tight screw topped jars – makes approximately 5 lbs of chutney.
